Prevention is always better than cure. That said; having a regular oral check-up at least once in 6 months can lead to better dental health and save your money. Preventive care for dental health, also known as preventive dentistry is the practice of looking after your gums and teeth to keep them healthy and functioning. Preventive dental check-ups aim at reducing the growth of dental diseases and complications. 

Here we shall see some of the preventive measures you can take for the healthy functioning of your teeth and gums:

1. Brushing twice a day

The first and foremost precautionary step towards a healthy dental condition is to brush your teeth twice a day. Make it a daily habit to brush your teeth in the morning and night before going to bed. This method helps to fight the bacteria that harm your gums and tissues. Make sure you also brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen-up your breath.

2. Rinse after every meal

A quick rinse with water after every meal can keep your mouth clean. It protects your enamel by removing the leftover food and sugar. As brushing each time after meals are not practical, it is good to rinse with water or an anti-bacterial mouthwash.

3. Cut down the sugar factor and acidic drinks

From a bed coffee/ tea in the morning to the evening cup of cappuccino, we consume a lot of sugar daily. Too much intake of sugar harms one’s dental health. The problem with drinking sugar-mixed coffee/tea or any such sugar beverage is that the harmful sugar stays in your saliva for a long time and increases the risk for new cavities.

4. Flossing – a good habit

Flossing even after brushing? Well, many of us are too lazy to floss. But the fact is flossing is easy and more convenient. To avoid the boredom of flossing, you can try flossing while watching TV or hearing music. Flossing once in a day prevents the collection of food particles and the development of the plague between the teeth.

5. Appointment with a dentist

Even if you have no toothache or gum problems, make it a routine to visit your dentist once every six months. Your dentist will help to know whether any teeth are damaged or require treatment. He/ she will also recommend some right measures to practice daily for good oral health.

6. Eat a balanced diet

A balanced diet helps to protect the teeth by providing the essential nutrients. Limiting the sugar intake, including simple carbohydrates and drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help you get all the vital vitamins and minerals for a healthy smile.

While these above mentioned preventive tips are activities that you can do at home, there are dental procedures for preventive dentistry. Be it for the prevention of dental decay or gum diseases; visiting a dental clinic to get treatment from experts is the right choice. While some tend to postpone a dental check-up, it is advised by experts to ensure that preventive care is taken regularly.
